Notch 8

Note: Tested browser performance seems fine if you have browser hardware acceleration enabled, but I have also included dedicated executables if better game performance is needed.

[Controls]

Navigate between the different train segments by pressing "A" or "D". Pressing the "Tab" key will also rotate between train segments. Lastly, there are number hotkeys for each train (1 = main engine, 2 = twin gun, 3 = cannon).

When selecting a train car, it's abilities will appear in the bottom right corner. The primary ability can be activated with the "E" key and the ultimate ability with the "R" key. Once activated, the skill will go onto cooldown. The timer will continue to count down even if you move/select another train car so it is recommended to rapidly switch between cars to take advantage of their abilities as often as possible.

[Gameplay]

This game was developed during Godot Wild Jam #59 for the theme "Train" (includes the optional wildcard "Find the Frog") .  This game was inspired heavily by games like Risk of Rain and Tower Defense games (my favorite genres). In Notch 8, you control a train with multiple train car segments with different abilities. The objective of the game is to collect as many upgrade items as possible from loot chests scattered throughout the level and survive as long as you can until the enemies eventually overwhelm you.

There are currently three types of train cars: main engine, twin gun car, and cannon car. Each of these cars also have two abilities, a "primary" and an "ultimate".

Main Engine:

  • E (Speed Boost): speed doubled for 5 seconds
  • R (Hard Brake): speed reduced to 0 for 5 seconds

Twin Gun Car:

  • E (Fan shot): shoot a sequence of shots in the direction of your cursor
  • R (Rapid shot): shoot a rapid fire stream of shots in the direction of your cursor

Cannon Car:

  • E (Big Shot): shoot a single explosive shot towards your cursor, exploding there
  • R (MIRV): shoot a clustered explosive shot towards your cursor, exploding into 7

There are also 19 different items currently implemented in the game. In the screenshots section I have included a brief description of all the items and what they do. All items are acquired from loot chests that will periodically appear out in the field. The loot chest must be damaged with your abilities to unlock the item contained within.

[High Score]

My personal high score is posted in the screenshots. I was able to last around 30 minutes with a final score of 18335. I would be curious to hear what everyone else can get, feel free to post in the comments!
